“Daaaaaaaaddyyyy….” The shrill voice was disturbing him in his sleep.
He tried to move one of the pillows over his head to somehow just blend it out. But before he even could do that, a kick to his shin just woke him up even more.
“Your daughter needs you.” Knock stated the obvious but he couldn’t help but groan.
“It’s funny that she is always MY daughter, when it’s the middle of the night and you want to sleep.”
With another groan he pushed himself to the side of the bed when another shriek from the other room made him move a bit faster.
“Daddy is coming, sweetheart.” He called into the direction of the other room and finally left his bed.
Korn tried to wipe away any remains of his sleepiness but somehow it just didn’t work. A quick glance to the clock on the wall told him that it was half past three in the morning. Absolutely no time for a three years old to be awake.
He yawned while he shuffled through the hallway to the room that had been their daughter’s bedroom for the last couple of years. They adopted her when she was just a tiny little peanut. But it didn’t matter that she was not biologically theirs. She was theirs by any other means and Korn was still not sure what he did in his past life to deserve this much happiness in this.
Well, maybe not right now, as waking up during the night to take care of a child was still not one of his favourite activities. But to be fair Ping had been a lot better during the last few months. They finally got her to sleep in her own bed. That made quiet a big change for all three of them as Ping had slept right between her two dads for the first two years of her staying with them.
And even thought that made other night time activities totally impossible, Korn wouldn’t have changed these two years for the world. Just having Ping and Knock with him, so close and so relaxed, just made Korn’s day every time it happened. He just loved both of them so much.
He opened the door to the kid’s room and saw Ping already sitting up in her bed while holding onto her little Piglet plushtoy for dear life.
“What’s up, little one?” Korn asked his daughter and made his way through the chaos of toys that was his daughter’s room.
In that regard she was totally Knock’s daughter. Korn would never understand how these two could just live with a chaos like that. But he gave up changing that about Knock years ago. And he had to admit: he gave up on Ping’s sense of tidiness pretty soon as well. It was just like fighting windmills.
“I had a bad dream, daddy.” Her voice was laced with sleep but he could also hear the tears that obviously had already fallen before he arrived.
Thank god for Piglet. Always there to dry her tears when he was just this tiny bit to slow to rise from his comfortable bed. He sat down next to the little girl and pulled her into hug. She sniffled a bit and then buried her face into his strong chest.
“A bad dream, huh? Was it that bad?” He asked her with a gentle voice.
“It was even worse.” Another sniffle came from the tiny girl. Korn just pulled her all the way into his lap where she made herself even more at home.
“Even worse? So what happened?” He gently caressed her dark, curly hair that was as always all over the place.
“You and dad just disappeared. I couldn’t find you at all. It didn’t matter where I was looking, you were gone.” She said with the breathlessness of any three years old who just had a nightmare.
“But look, I am here. And dad is just next door. Can’t you hear him snore?” Korn just nudged his little girl into her side and when he heard a little giggle coming out of her mouth he felt relaxed.
“Dad always snores so loud.” Ping stated with a tiny laugh, the bad dream almost forgotten.
“It was really just a bad dream, Ping. Nothing else. Dad and daddy are both here and we are never going to leave you. Not in a million years.” He hugged her even closer.
“Promise?” She asked with a small voice.
“I cross my heart and hope to die.” Korn laughed when his little daughter hit him in his arm.
“Daddy! Don’t say that. I don’t want you to die!” She scolded him.
“It’s just an expression, butterfly, just an expression. But yes, I promise. I will never leave you. You and your dad are the most important people in my life and I will never ever just disappear. I mean, who would make dinner for you? Dad?” Ping giggled again.
“Dad can’t cook.” She stated matter of fact and now it was Korn’s turn to laugh.
His husband was a brilliant and wonderful father, but even in all these years he still hadn’t managed to master more then a fried egg and even that was a stretch.
“See, I have to stay. Otherwise you two would starve.” He kissed her onto her curls, feeling her relaxing more and more into his arms.
“Come on, let’s go back to sleep.” With these words Ping’s hands just gripped into his pyjamas. Korn understood without her even saying a word.
“Okay, just this once. But you have to share the blanket with dad. I am not going to freeze my butt off because you two need to roll up in your blankets like a burrito.” He rolled his eyes.
“Daddy said a bad word.” Ping reminded him helpfully and Korn blushed for a second.
But well, it was after three in the morning. He was allowed to swear at least a bit.
He got up from the bedside and pulled Ping up with him. She just snuggled into his arms, always having the beloved Piglet in her arms. Korn switched off her bedside light and carefully carried his precious cargo over to their master bedroom.
Knock was still snoring rather loudly, lying slap bang in the middle of their king size bed. He resembled a starfish the way he was trying to occupy as much space as he humanly could. Korn couldn’t help but smile. Knock was always adorable. Even when he was deep asleep, snoring like a lumberjack and hogging all the blankets and pillows possible.
With a tiny laugh he put Ping down on his side of the bed, where she quickly tried to slip under part of a blanket, Knock didn’t use as part of his sleeping contraption. But apparently that was still not enough blanket as Korn witnessed Ping trying to get her bear of a dad to move at least a little bit. When he didn’t move at all, she even used her tiny feet to help, but again he wouldn’t budge.
So she just tried to pull a bit stronger, while kicking him a bit harder. When her foot connected with his nose by accident he finally woke up.
“Hey, what was that?” Knock finally opened his eyes and started rubbing his hurting nose.
“I am sorry, dad. But you wouldn’t move over to make some space for daddy and me.” Ping stated with not much guilt in her voice.
Korn just smirked to himself. He normally did something similar when Knock wouldn’t budge from hogging the bed, but he would always get scolded, no matter how right he was in his attempts to get some space in his own bed.
But this was Ping they were talking about. Cute, sweet little Ping. And she was Knock’s biggest weakness.
With a tiny smile he turned his head and finally saw his little daughter.
“Ping? What are you doing here?” He asked her, while still rubbing his nose.
“I had a bad dream. Daddy said I can sleep here.” She beamed at him, while a scolding look from Knock was thrown in Korn’s direction.
“Daddy didn’t say that whatsoever.” Korn laughed. “But I might have just taken her with me anyway.” He sat down on the bed as well, since Knock now finally scooted over at least a bit, making space for his husband and child.
“You don’t mind, do you?” Korn asked but he knew the answer anyway.
“I don’t, but you have to talk to my nose about it.” He grumbled and Ping had at least the decency to look a bit guilty. She moved over to her dad and gave him a clumsy kiss on his nose.
“Better? Daddy always says, his kisses make everything better. Maybe my kisses do the same?” Ping suggested with her childish naivety, that made both men always go all giddy. Knock just beamed at his little daughter.
“Your and daddy’s kisses are the best for sure. My nose doesn’t hurt at all anymore.” He reassured his daughter while pulling her completely over to his side of the bed. The little girl giggled at the attack on her and snuggled closer to her dad. Piglet always by her side.
Korn tried his best to get at least a pillow and a tiny corner of a blanket, before he also settled back into bed. It didn’t take long and he could hear snoring echoing over from the other side of the bed. He turned onto his side and what he saw made his heart explode with happiness.
Knock was laying on his side, hair all tussled up, his mouth slightly open, snoring like his life depended on it. In his arms, he held their little daughter. Her dark curls were the same mess as her father’s. Knock had both his arms wrapped around her tiny body and Ping mimicked the same pose just with Piglet in her arms. Her mouth was also slightly open and even though her snoring was more a loud breathing then a real snore it still resembled her dad so much, that Korn couldn’t help but beam at them both.
He really was a lucky man. Not only did he have the perfect husband. No, he also had the perfect little daughter. He never really thought he would have a family, after he realised he was gay. And it never bothered him that much. He loved Knock and he loved being with him.
But somehow now… Being not just a couple… Being a proper family…
Now everything finally felt complete. Everything was just perfect the way it was and Korn knew he would kill everyone who would just even contemplate hurting his little family.
He loved them both so much and right here, right now… With these two snoring people next to him, he knew he was exactly where he was suppose to be.
