Tharn/Type: Or Why Season Two Is Actually Awesome

Attention: I am gonna spoil the living daylight out of this show. So please, if you want to avoid spoilers, turn around, close this blog and come back once you have watched it .

Tonight is the big season finale of one of the most anticipated second seasons of a BL ever. “Tharn/Type Seven Years Of Love” is gonna come to an end and I can’t help it but be totally and utterly in love with this season. If you ask me, it’s way better than season one and I will rewatch it until I am able to speak every single word of dialog by heart.

I have recently seen so many bad reviews for this show, that I really feel the need to just share my view on it, because as you can already see, it’s gonna be different. But let me maybe start with a very important, little fact about me.

I have been in a relationship with my hubby for a LONG time now. Like reaaaaally long. So my view on this show is based on having been in a long term relationship myself and I think that might change things a bit when discussing the content of the show.

Don’t get me wrong. There absolutely were parts in season two I didn’t like. The whole scaring Fiat situation for example. That was just this clearly stupid plan that carried Type’s hand writing all over. Let’s just agree, that Type is not a person people should turn to for any plans at all. It will just really end badly. He definitely is no planner. Lol.

But other things in this show made me really, really happy because we usually don’t see them in shows where it’s all about the glitz and the glam of getting together, having these butterflies in your tummy and being just so in love. Because relationships change over time and especially the seventh year of a relationship is extremely hard. I mean, i’m sure you have heard of the seventh year itch and this is really a thing.

Because when you have been together for so long some issues just arise. Which for example is: Change of your personal life.

Like Type and Tharn who both started working for example. Because believe me, a relationship during school or uni is so different from having a relationship while working. Things just change, you have less time for each other and less time for yourself. So you need to make an effort to not let the romance die and I lived for the way they described this during the second season.

I loved that Type says he is too tired for sex. Because yes, you can be the most sexual active person. Still, work comes so often in the way. When you are freshly together it doesn’t matter if you just have worked 10 hours, are unwashed and on the verge of collapsing. You will just go for it anyway.

But after seven years… things just change and I love that they are not shying away from that. It also takes an effort to continue with your relationship. And here I have to say I love how Tharn always did these super kitschy little gestures. Like the putting the tent on the roof or just massaging Type’s legs.

In a way it’s about keeping your love alive while everything around you gets more important. It’s a bit like your relationship turns from this major thing that’s always on your mind to this kind of background noise which is just always there. This might now sound like it’s a negative thing but it isn’t really.

Because your relationship turns into your safety net, into always having someone there who has your back. It’s really a beautiful thing and enables you to really succeed in life if you want to. But it also makes keeping your relationship going difficult and it really needs an awful lot of effort. Love alone is never enough for that. There always needs to be a will to take care of your relationship while also enabling your partner and yourself to grow into the people you want to be.

So the other obvious problem that comes up during the seventh year itch is the question of: Where are we going with this? You have been together for long enough for people to start commenting when are you gonna get married and it might also be a thought that comes up for yourself or your partner.

And again kudos for how they portrait it. They could have even made it a bit more radical but there is still tonight coming up and also the special episode so i’m gonna give them a pass here for now.

But the whole issue really gets tricky when one partner wants to marry and the other doesn’t. And I think that’s really where the whole crux of this series lies. Tharn wants to marry, Type doesn’t and believe me when I’m telling you this is one of the worst situations you can be in. Because this has nothing to do with love. This has something to do with fundamental beliefs and wishes and it’s something that can’t be easily changed.

Tharn for me wants to get married so desperately because he feels insecure about his relationship with Type. Type always was wary about being open about his relationship and even after seven years he still hides his relationship at work, which must be hard for Tharn. For him it really must feel like Type is ashamed of him. And in a way Type can explain again and again why he is doing what he is doing and it won’t change the feeling for Tharn. I think you would need to have the biggest ego in world history to not start doubting your partner and their love for you if they continue to hide it.

Why Type hides the relationship makes sense for me as well. He was a victim of gossip at such a young age and when something so traumatic and awful happened to him, I can understand why he is a bit more reluctant to share personal things with other people. He doesn’t want to be in the center of attention and most importantly he doesn’t want Tharn and his family to be the center of gossip and potential slander. So him hiding his relationship is more out of a need to protect his love and his family and I think it speaks volumes how much Type actually loves Tharn and his whole family.

So moving on to the whole marriage conundrum. Tharn wants to marry because he loves Type and he wants a proper family. In his head marriage is a natural part of it and he wants to show off his boy to the world. He also is insecure about his relationship and practically wants to put a ring on Type’s hand to make sure he doesn’t run off.

Type on the other hand has other fundamental views. He doesn’t believe that a marriage is necessary for them to be together forever. I’m pretty sure once our hot headed thunderer decided to totally go for it with Tharn and give a proper relationship a go he was already convinced that this is it. He will stay with Tharn forever and Tharn will stay with him.

I am pretty sure that Type has a very deep belief in their love and therefore doesn’t see the need to get married for that. One the other hand, Type is still really scared about causing more gossip and drama and doesn’t want to cause any harm to Tharn or his family. Due to their social standing it’s pretty obvious that there will be drama involved and he just doesn’t feel that the pros for a wedding outweigh the negative.

So we have our two babes here who both want and need something different.

Tharn is insecure and also has this dream of having a proper, legal family. He literally wants to lock all this down and for him this means a wedding.

Type on the other hand is so scared of harming the people he loves that a wedding doesn’t seem like something positive. And since he also feels like they are married anyway (sharing their lives, flat, everything), so why do this when it’s all negative and they have already decided that this is it. They are gonna stay together forever.

So for me this is really the main focus of the whole show. To show how different views on your plans for your future can become a massive test for your love. Because that these two love each other is never a question.

The question is more about how to keep your love safe and healthy when reality and other people are coming crashing in.

I heard a lot about people complaining about unnecessary drama in season two and I really couldn’t disagree more. Every fight, every issue they had were little puzzle pieces to make this whole conflict clear.

Fiat was necessary to highlight how insecure Tharn still is about his relationship. He was also necessary to show that Type wouldn’t even glance at another person, no matter how young, pretty and seductive they are. All these fights about getting married and Tharn always asking again and again… It just shows how much he needs the reassurance from Type that he is still loved and he will stay with him forever.

And everything happening at work for Type was also an amazing way of showing that real life will come in the way of love. It always does. And it’s about how you work around that, how you ensure that your love can survive that.

Maybe that’s also a part where Tharn’s insecurity comes from. From the change of their previous lives in university to Type being always stressed and high strung due to the incredible disgusting situation at work. The whole bullying storyline also showed us beautifully that Type never thought about himself when he hid his relationship with Tharn. Because the very moment someone insulted Tharn, he lost it. He endured MONTHS of personal humiliation and bullying. But it literally took a minute of his boss slandering Tharn for Type to lose his temper.

So again for me this is beautiful storytelling.

And I guess that’s what I like so much about this show. The story they are telling is very real in a way and very raw. It’s about the issues all long term couples face and it makes me adore this season so much more than the first one. You literally can analyse every step these two take during this season into oblivion. And that’s my kind of show.

Like for Type now to ordain is just so awesome again. It shows the pressure that thai children face to ensure that they honour their parents. Normally it’s expected that they marry, have a good job and yes, have kids. So since Type can’t do that (he would never under any circumstances leave Tharn), he tries to do the next best thing and honour his parents with him getting ordained. Again it shows so much about Type’s character and how much he wants to ensure that the people around him are okay.

People often call Type selfish because of his huge temper and his grumpy exterior. But behind all of the tough acts he is so caring and always wants to ensure everyone is okay. He could have for example just leave all the work his boss gave him. But every file he had to work on was another person or something that needed to be done for the hospital and his colleagues. I don’t think Type did all this to serve his boss. He did it because he wanted to make sure that the other people involved (colleagues and patients) are okay and well cared for.

Oh, I could go on for ages like this. Pick up different examples of how the screenwriter managed to paint a whole picture with all these tiny little side stories. Like how Type always first cared about Fiat’s health. He is a doctor and he loves his job. He wants to help and he really takes his job extremely seriously. He even continues to take care of a patient that is massively overreaching. And again this is a very true description of working in a job like that. I am not a doctor, but I’m a counsellor and it happens a lot that people misunderstand our caring kindness with something else.

And that’s why I even find Fiat’s obsession with Type so believable. Fiat has a very sad homelife and he feels like no one ever cares for him. He has been in love with his best friend for ages, but again Leo is rather cold in his behaviour towards Fiat (obviously because he is also in love with Fiat and has his own issues). So Type is one of the first people to listen to him (Fiat doesn’t want the surgery and Type is the only one taking him and his opinion seriously) and who shows him kindness. No wonder the confused lad is mixing things up in his brain and suddenly thinks Type’s kindness has a totally different reason.

So yeah… I really enjoyed the second season immensely and I think they have talked about so many really interesting points in it. They are really showing us what growing up means. Not just in a way of getting a job and having your life turned on its head. It’s also about how a relationship has to grow up. From this all consuming puppy love to being the fundament for something more.

For me TharnType was always about growth. Season one showed us two deeply flawed humans who helped each other grow into better people just because of the love they shared for each other. And season two now is definitely just going along with it. It shows us how love has to grow and change over time if you want your love to survive.

And just like in season one Mew and Gulf did an amazing job in conveying all these emotions and they both made it a hell of a ride. Were there too many hot scenes that were just included to please the fans? No, I don’t think so. Because yes, I enjoyed the love scenes obviously. But they never used any skinship just for the sake of it. They used skinship to show that there is nothing wrong with the love that these two share. The problem begins when this love meets the outside world.

In a way falling in love is the easy part. Keeping this love alive, that’s where the tricky part starts…

And for me, season two definitely showed us that as long as you try and really give your all, there is almost nothing that can destroy true love. It’s definitely a battle being in a long term relationship and love is absolutely not enough to make it work. But love is the most important basis for any relationship.

So yes. I enjoyed season two so much and I hope we are gonna see more stories about how love grows and changes over time. Because even though it might not be the kind of fireworks that come along with a new relationship, it’s still beautiful and worth talking about…
