Recently there has been a lot of drama surrounding our cuties and their real life relationships. Fans are questioning if some of our couples are real couples or if it’s just fanservice. And I honestly get it.
When I first saw pictures of Max with his “girlfriend” I was (let me put it mildly) not amused. Why? I honestly don’t know. Because I normally don’t ship real persons couples. As long as my babes are happy I am cool.
But somehow just knowing that Max and Tul are not are real couple hurt. It was like this faint little pain in my tiny little BL heart that just wouldn’t go away. Until I did the only reasonable thing: I chose to ignore it.
And after having a later night conversation with my lovely Polca Dot I even found the best solution to all my BL trouble:
The theory of Schrödinger’s cat.
Or in this case:
The theory of Heartbreak’s BL couples.
I know I don’t make much sense right now, but let me explain.
Schröding was this science dude that brought up an interesting thought a long time ago. If you put a cat into a box, how can you know if that cat is still alive? You would have to open that box to know if the cat is still alive, but if you can’t open the box, you will never know. So what is this cat? Is it alive or is it dead?
For the person outside of the box this cat can be both at the same time which obviously is a paradox, but it’s true. Since you don’t know any better and have no way to find out any better this cat is both: alive and dead at the same time.
So why am I talking about dead and alive cats in a blog about BL, you might ask?
Because I think that our BL couples are a bit like the cat in Schrödinger’s idea.
We have two people here that we don’t know in real life. We might have an incline what’s happening in their life, how they are and what they feel, but in the end, we, as fans, don’t know. It’s like the cat in the box all over again.
It doesn’t matter what happens in the future, we will never know what’s going on in the box. A couple might have been in love for a while. Maybe just one party fell in love and never told the other. Maybe there was never anything. Or maybe they are in a long standing relationship but no one knows about it but them. There are so many ways things could go inside this box without us never knowing.
Hell, maybe no one other then these two will ever know.
But let’s make it a bit more clear with an example. Let’s look at Off and Gun.
These two are extremely close and are showing so much couply things in public it’s ridiculous. One honestly could believe they are in a relationship. The way they talk, the way they behave with each other and let’s not forget to mention all these kisses and hugs.
But do we know what’s happening behind close doors? Do we know if this is just fabulous fan service? No, we don’t and I am afraid we will never know.
Because even if these two would decide to come out of the closet and tell the world that they are a real couple, would that neccessaryly be the truth? No, it could be another PR stunt for all we know. The same for the other extreme: we find out they both have girlfriends.
Do we know if they really have girlfriends? Is that maybe a cover for not being outed as gay? Or are they honestly deeply in love with other people? We will never know.
We as fans have to have loads of faith and believe in our boys but we always have to understand that some things we will never know. It’s inside this box and this box is something that’s just between these two people and there is no way to ever know the full truth of what is happening inside this box.
Maybe Krist and Singto fell in love at one point and shared a passionate kiss behind cameras. Maybe Art and Mew were all a PR stunt gone bad. Maybe Off and Gun hate each other in reality but are like Oscar winning actors.
We will just never know the truth behind all this.
And that’s why I decided for myself to see our cuties as a version of said cat. Because I don’t know what’s happening inside this box, our couples could be in a real relationship or they might not be. It’s up to my own interpretation. I have the freedom to believe what I want about it.
So for my own happiness I decided to believe that some of our babes are together. In my happy land they are happy together in their little box, shielded away from the public and are being just simply happy. See, for me the cat in the box is alive.
And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. As long as me believing that the cat is alive doesn’t lead to me being rude or hateful on social media towards our cuties I don’t see any harm in me believing the cat or in this case their relationship is alive.
As long as I am aware that this is all just a construct and that the cat could be also dead there is nothing wrong in believing whatever makes you feel good.
Our boys are in the business of pretending. Acting is nothing else then play pretend and their fan service is there to make us feel happy and joyful.
So why not just enjoy the ride and fall down into your own fantasy world where Off and Gun are having a Sunday brunch double date together with Tay and New?
In my world Max and Tul are having such a hot and romantic affair with each other and Krist and Singto at least kissed once very passionately without anyone else knowing. Jingyu and Weizhou are long suffering partners who fell in love while doing Addicted. And Chris and Jake are both still too shy to admit that they are deeply in love with each other.
See, my fantasy world is pretty awesome and as long as I am aware that this is all just a possibility and NOT the truth, this is absolutely fine.
So you can choose what you want to believe. Is your cat dead or alive? It’s up to you.
