Hidden Gem: Long Time No See
Another Thursday, another gem for you guys and today’s gem has been one of my long time favourites. I even bought the freaking thing, that’s how much I love it. So i can give you already a heads up. This blog will be nothing but me shamelessly gushing over the awesomeness that is:
Long Time No See
Plot Summary
Flying Dagger is the best hitman Seoul has to offer. He is quick, he is efficient and he never fails. But what about the man behind the “job”? Chisoo, Flying Dagger’s real name, is a quiet and rather lonely man who loves to write. Via his writing he meets Gitae, a boy who is so full of sunshine and happiness he could light up a whole galaxy just by himself. Chisoo of course falls head over heels for the pretty boy. Everything could be so perfect, but can love ever work out for a hitman? There is on one side his “Father” who is not amused about the new developments in Chisoo’s life. And then there is Gitae, who has his own secrets he is hiding.
Why You Should Watch It
The setting
It’s not school. Hallelujah and once more for the people in the back. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see two grown up men fall in love. I am also the biggest sucker in the world for a good crime story and I simply love love stories that take place in surroundings where love is normally just seen as a weakness and nothing that you should pursue.
The storyline and the cinematic work
The story is just awesome. I should know, I made a whole blog series out of analysing every single episode. And you can analyse the living bejesus out of these five episodes. Everything has a meaning, everything is done with a purpose and I can promise you that you will always find something new to reflect on, no matter how often you have watched it. Personally I love movies or shows like that. Stuff that makes me think and that makes me wanna go deeper. This show is absolutely that.
The acting
Both main actors are just superb. You will love them. Even though they both portrait so difficult characters with a lot of conflicting sides to them, they are always managing to get it right. Chisoo on one hand is this cold blooded killer and the fighting scenes are absolutely spectacular. But the love scenes at the same time are some of the most tender and gentle scenes I have seen in BL.
The skinship
Oh, let’s get down to the nitty gritty, okay. This show has love scenes and I have to say they are some of the best I have seen so far. They are always so fitting to the storyline and they are important for the development. They are not in there to show us some sexy times because we fans like that. No, the sex scenes are actually there for a reason and when you see it, you will know what i mean.
I can go on forever honestly, but let’s move on to why you might now want to see this wonderful show….
Why You Might Not Want to Watch It
It’s a mature show
The topic is mature, the way they have filmed it is mature and the whole storyline is mature. So I don’t think it’s something for the 14 years olds on here (or at least I wouldn’t recommend it). The show is also pretty deep and if you are not willing to put your mind to it, it won’t make much sense to you. This is not popcorn cinema. It just isn’t.
The violence is real
If you don’t like violence and blood, this is again not for you. We are talking hit man here and there is a LOT of blood in this show. So please, if you are squeamish, maybe don’t watch it, or have a pillow ready to hide behind.
Personal Notes
I just freaking love this show. I have watched it about 50 times by now, maybe more. I had a few weeks where i would watch it literally every day, so i think that says a lot.
As i mentioned above i also made a review series about this show and you can find them in my profile. Just in case you are interested in my thoughts about this wonderful gem.
As a parting comment i would just really like to say that if you like movies or shows that make you think then this is the one for you. The topics are so different from what we normally see, but are again still so close to all of our lives, believe it or not. We are having the question “what is family”, we are looking into trust and at how much you can give up for the people you love. It really is just an awesome little piece of film and I can’t recommend this gem enough!
Where to watch
You can find this beautiful gem on vimeo for cheap 10 dollars. The money goes straight to the production company who has made a lot more beautiful gay movies and shows. So support them if you can. Otherwise I don’t have to explain to you where you can find things…
Have fun watching it. It’s honestly one of my all time favourites and you won’t be disappointed if you give this wonderful gem a chance.
