Hidden Gem: Love Online Extra

Hi my lovelies…

I hope you are all doing good and fine and I think I have to apologise for my absence first of all. I am currently struggling a tiny bit with my health and I am therefore not really a lot online. But i promised a Gem for today and so I shall deliver (before crawling back into my blanket fort where I have been living for the last week).

So this Gem is something that is rather close to my heart. I know it’s not THAT popular (for a specific reason) but doesn’t that make it like the perfect gem for our thursday series? I would say yes.

What movie am i talking about?

Love Online Extra

The Extra in the title results in the two main characters of this movie having appeared in the original Love Online which is a normal hetero movie. But someone very clever thought that these two characters deserve their own moment in the spotlight and I can’t tell you how much i love this person. Because they were freaking right.

Synopsis:

Lan Yi Jing and Bai Xiao Peng have a rather unusual connection. Since their parents have been best friends since their own childhood their fathers decided when their wives got pregnant, that their children should get married as well once they are grown ups. What funny twist of fate that both their children are boys…

Which brings us the beginning of this movie. Lan Yi Jing is an extremely successful star now and Bai Xiao Peng, as a second generation rich kid, is more of a man of leisure, who likes to party and hang around with his friends. So what does his clever father decide? Right! He should learn from his childhood friend Lan Yi Jing on how to be a successful adult. Unfortunately neither Xiao Peng nor Yi Jing are happy about this idea since they both developed into polar opposites. So of course we all know what’s going to happen from here on out…

Why you might like it:

  • The two main actors are GORGEOUS! Like seriously eye candy. One of them you might even recognise because our lovely Nick Yang also played a big role in HiStory Crossing the Line. And yes, I admit it. The reason why I watched this movie was because I have the softest spot for this incredibly cute human being. His eyes are just so… *melts like ice cream in the sun* Huang You Qi is also really attractive, but more a broody kind of way. So while we have Nick, the happy, go lucky, golden retriever, we get with You Qi a nice broody french bulldog. A perfect mix, if you ask me.
  • The storyline is nothing new. They didn’t invent the BL wheel new, but i dont care one bit. If you are in need of a cute and fluffy movie without too much heartbreak then this movie is totally for you. It is fun, it is cute, it isn’t really realistic, but who cares. I wanna spend my Sundays in my blanket fort watching something cute and fun where my brain doesn’t have to work. And this movie ticks all these boxes.
  • It has a happy end. Do I need to say more? I don’t think I have to.

Why you might not like it:

  • It is BROMANCE. Yes, I said the ugly word and i guess in THEORY it is a bromance and not a BL. I have screened this movie countless times on here and half the time people were majorly pissed with me because they felt cheated due to the fact that there is no clear cut couple in it. But for me it is still a love story and I have enough fantasy to fill in the spots they left so delightfully blank. Yes, we don’t have a kiss or something like that. But if you watch this movie and can tell me afterwards that these two are NOT a couple… Then you clearly have some deficit in the fantasy department.
  • It is chinese. So this is already another reason why this is not very touchy feely. And you also need to consider the time this movie came out. In 2017 China JUST tried to dip their toes in more BL content, like proper BL and we all know how quickly it crashed and burned once Addicted came out. So please also take into consideration the time and place this was filmed and maybe then try it again with some fantasy and some common sense and I’m sure you will also see the same extremely cute couple I see everytime I watch this movie.
  • There is almost no skinship at all. Again due to the situation, the country and the release year we can’t expect much different, but I still believe that the chemistry between the two mains is totally making this skinship issue a non issue for me. The way these two look at each other alone… *melts into another puddle*

Conclusion

I have to admit that I watched this movie a ridiculous amount of times. Mainly because i am the biggest sucker for Nick Yang and if you are as well, then this movie will make you a lot more happy than Crossing the Line did. Because this time around Nick really can shine and show his acting abilities. He is incredibly funny and he makes me laugh so much in this role. And this in combination with the more severe and strict character You Qi is portraying i think it is just a nice and fluffy movie you can enjoy whenever really. Again, they don’t invent the wheel new and if you want skinship then please look somewhere else. If you want a storyline that is well told and some acting that might make you go weak at the knees, then this is definitely for you.

And that’s it for this week’s Hidden Gem. I apologise for not sticking to Reminders as promised at our last Olympics but I have already written a Gem about Love Sick and since Reminders is total rubbish unless you watch the Phun and Noh cut (yes, I really said it and yes, i also really mean it), i thought i just switch it around and present you a different movie instead. I hope you don’t mind.
