Hidden Gem: My Beautiful Man

Hello, hello, my friendly Misfits,

It’s Thursday and that means we are having another gem for you. And this time we are going current for a change. Wohoooo. I am pretty sure that most of you have heard about this fantastic show already, but I am so in love with it that it feels like I have to sing the praise of this show a little bit more as everyone in the world should know how awesome and fantastic it is. What show do I mean?

My Beautiful Man

I have to admit when I watched the first few episodes I really, really disliked the content of it. I am not a fan of bullying and I don’t really like watching stuff like that. Buuuuut for me that’s the biggest mistake you can make with that show: Believe that it’s actually about bullying when it’s about so much more. But I am getting ahead of myself.

What Is It About?

Hira is still in highschool when his parents leave the country leaving him alone in their big house to finish school. Hira was never popular and he has never had any friends. His stutter made him a target for ridicule for as long as he can remember and he doesn’t think very highly about himself. This all changes when Kiyoi steps into his life. Kioyi being the star of class, the most popular boy around, is so far out of Hira’s league that he would be just happy staring at Kiyoi from afar. But when Kiyoi suddenly takes an interest in Hira, things slowly, but surely change. But what does Kioyi really want from Hira, the loser?

Why You Might Wanna Watch It:

This series has just six episodes and from pretty much the first episode on you think you have figured the storyline out and you know what is going to happen here. Oh boy, you couldn’t be more wrong. Because literally NOTHING is what it seems and every coin has two sides. I think for me this is really the biggest appeal to this show. You just don’t know what’s going on and when things are finally revealed you will feel in utter shock. Like it will make you gape like an idiot and you will be so surprised and confused as to why you didn’t notice this all earlier. And I am the biggest sucker for these kinds of storylines. Because in a way the production is taking you on the same journey as Hira is on and you are feeling and thinking what he does and at one point you just have to realise that sometimes things are just not what they seem. So yeah, if you like going through an entire journey of exploration then this show is for you.

The acting is utterly flawless. Hagiwara Riku who plays Hira is such a seasoned pro in the acting world. And it shows. He plays Hira with a perfection and a relatability that it’s sheer crazy to me. And Yagi Yusei, who plays gorgeous Kiyoi, surprised me at every turn. I am sure he was more casted because he is pretty much a God walking among men, but when he starts showing his emotional side… Heaven’s. I was just so gobsmacked and it felt all so relatable and real and I had seriously tears in my eyes. Because his side of the story is something that doesn’t get told often and I am so happy that they did it here. So yeah, the acting is utterly superb and the chemistry between these two is just totally out of this world. The way things change from the beginning to the end is all totally believable and that’s literally all down to the fact that these two know what they are doing and are acting their souls out for us. It’s absolutely marvellous to observe and it’s literally a feast for every fan of a good BL.

The visuals are totally stunning and the production is also really proper and solid. I mean, Japanese BLs are always of a high quality and this one is no different. And Yagi Jusei might be the best looking human on planet earth or really close to that. So just from the visual side of things this show is such a treat.

Let’s go once more back to the storyline as I am really so in love with it. And even though the entire storyline is very unique and might even feel a bit complicated, they are not leaving any plot holes or open questions. At the end of the show you just wish it continues on and you want to see more and you want to know more and you are curious and excited. But storyline wise they tie everything extremely nicely up and it’s really a joy to follow such a well thought out plot with no major issues whatsoever.

Why You Might Not Like It:

The behaviour of everyone in that show towards Hira is sometimes very hard to watch and it might even be seen as bullying. The first few episodes are sometimes a bit hard to watch and you might have scenes where you really have to stop and swallow once very hard, because what you see is definitely not comfortable. But I would totally recommend staying with the storyline and trust that it all makes sense in the end. But yes, if bullying behaviour is a trigger for you, maybe this is not the right show for you.

If you are looking for a healthy relationship and leads who are perfect please just pass this by. Because Hira and Kiyoi both have so many flaws and are cruel and mean and sometimes just stupid. I think it’s a very realistic view on a situation like this, but some people are not fans of this kind of realism and complex storytelling. So again, if you are looking for healthy and proper, no, this is not for you. If you wanna see that love can sometimes come in the most surprising packages… Then please watch on.

It’s a bit short. So if you are a fan of long dramas, this one is not a long drama. I am still hoping and praying we are getting a movie or even a second season as I would literally just die to see how things go from where they left it, but yes, currently all we can do is dream.

It’s gonna make you addicted and you will think of nothing else for a while then the utter unfairness that a human being can be so beautiful and gorgeous as Yagi and you still look like a potato (well, these were my thoughts, but I thought I give you a warning, this might happen. lol).

Finale Thoughts:

I honestly didn’t like the show for the first episodes. I thought I knew where they were going and I didn’t like the direction one bit. And then they took everything I expected, pushed it on it’s head and made me fall so hard and fast in love that my jaw still has bruising from the amount of time it dropped to the floor. I honest to god can’t recommend this show any more then I do here, because yes, it is absolutely fantastic and such a masterpiece that I still am not over it. The amount of times I have rewatched different episodes and scenes is almost stupid and I really, really, really can’t get enough of the dynamic and adoration between Hira and Kiyoi.

If you can take a bit of a tricky start, please go and watch this show. It’s something so special and the way they are telling the story is just so breathtakingly exciting. So yeah, please do yourself a favour and stick the first unpleasantness out because it all is gonna make sense in the end and the journey to this final conclusion is delicious, sexy and very, very raw and real.
