Hello, hello, hello, my lovely Misfits,
It’s Thursday and that means it’s Hidden Gem Day. Wohooooo. *does a little party dance* We all know how much I love writing for you different Gems but this week I have something with me that just can’t make me stop swooning like a crazy person. So I apologise in advance, but you are gonna get the entire Heartbreak fangirl mode experience here. But this series has made me smile so hard… There is just no other way than going completely fangirl crazy on it’s ass.
As we all can see very clearly in the title, I am talking today about
My Ride
This show is pretty much THE show we all waited for the longest time for. I can remember my first year here on BLDA we got notification after notification about the casting and so on. But everytime it looked like things moved forward they had to recast someone again or rewrite the script or find more money makers… It’s really crazy that this show has even seen the light of day, I swear. I really didn’t expect them to finish this project at all and I always thought that I would revisit the idea of this wonderful BL on the graveyard for all good ideas. But I have rarely been this happy about being completely wrong and I am so, so grateful to everyone who stuck with this series and made it happen in the end. You guys are rockstars, seriously.
But let’s have a bit more of a closer look at our lovely show at hand…
What Is It About?
When young doctor Tawan meets the motorcab driver Mork their lives couldn’t be more different. Mork got dumped by his long standing girlfriend while Tawan has just started a relationship with a fellow doctor. Their lives and their circumstances really couldn’t be any more different, but something draws these two together again and again. And while their friendship is blooming into a wonderful source of support for both men, Tawan’s relationship with Por is hitting more and more potholes. But can a doctor and a cab driver ever be a couple? Can their differences ever be bridged? I guess you have to watch to find out…
Why You Might Like It:
It’s the classic Thai BL with a twist, as I like to say these days. It’s really a wonderful love story between two unexpected parties and I love the fact that they showed this time two men who are both grown up and are standing with two feet in the middle of their lives. Don’t get me wrong. I love students as much as the next person, but sometimes it’s just refreshing to see people deal with other issues then the next test. So yeah, the who premiss is very classic Thai BL, but they changed just enough to make it interesting again.
The side characters are all awesome. Starting with Nadia, Tawan’s trusted best friend, all the way down to Mork’s entire family. Every character is just really well fleshed out and even if they are just given a moment or two, they are all making sense and they are all so likeable. I even got invested in the hetero couple. I think that should tell you enough. I never watch hetero love stories.
The secondary couple is very cute and again slightly unexpected. Boss and Toy are a clear enemy to lovers trope and if you liked Best as Runway in My Dream, then you gonna love this one as well as we are seeing a completely different side to Best. No longer is he the shy, sweet boy, but no, he is the king of thunderer in this series and it fits him very well. Yoon also is doing a stellar job as Toy, but ever since he kissed Taley he pretty much can read the phone book to me and I would be smitten.
Let’s move to the main attraction of this show: The main couple. Fluke and Fame are doing such a fantastic job bringing Mork and Tawan to life that you just can’t help yourself but fall in love with them. I would go so far and say that if you are immune to Fluke’s dimples, then there is something very clearly wrong with you. He definitely has the second best dimples in Thai BL (right behind Nanon, thank you) and it’s definitely worth watching that show just because of these dimples. I have been swooning and swaying over them for like two weeks straight after finishing the show. Just so beautiful and cute.
But other than the dimples, Mork and Tawan bring up an interesting question. Can love really be enough or can differences in job, education, social background be too much for a blossoming love? I really enjoyed this little educational journey into this question and I would also agree with the outcome the show finds for said question. But yeah, the storyline is interesting. I love that both characters come with bagedge of their own and that they have both things to deal with. So yeah, it’s a cleverly told story and I can assure you, you’re gonna love it so much.
Why You Might Not Like It:
There is a huge cheating storyline going on. I know that some people just don’t care about cheating, which I think is fair enough. But if you don’t like cheating, then this is not for you.
The whole set up is a bit more for a grown up audience but there is no smut or a lot of skinship there. I mean, they still tough and kiss, but the skinship is more on a tender and gentle side which just makes it again so swoon worthy. But if you expect a very easy storyline for kids, then no, you are wrong here. If you are expecting hot and smoking skinship, then again, move on, there is nothing for you here.
The setting is a lot of the time a hospital. Again, if you have an issue with hospitals, then this is a no go for you.
Finale Thoughts:
As you can see I really am having trouble finding something negative to say about this show. I literally binge watched the entire show through a few nights and I just couldn’t stop. I fell so hard for Fluke and I so hope that we are gonna see him in more shows in future. There is just a gentleness about him while he looks so rough around the edges, that really is intriguing me. Given the right role I am sure he could do proper damage to our hearts.
But as a whole this series won’t disappoint you. If you are a fan of classic Thai BL, then this show is for you. It’s nothing fancy and sparkly, but it’s a proper little gem in a sea of a lot of rubbish at the moment. I definitely would say that My Ride is one of these shows that you definitely need to watch if you are a Thai BL fan. Because it’s literally all the best things about BL combined in it. There are even KIDS involved. So yeah, the entire show hit every single spot for me and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did, if you haven’t watched it already.
If you have watched it already: Please leave a comment below and tell the world how right I am with everything. This show is just so freaking awesome and people need to watch it! Like legit. You NEED to watch it. It’s this freaking good.
*coughs* But okay, I think I have been swooning enough for today. So I shall leave you right now and I hope you enjoyed our little Gem for the day. Stay tune for next week when we present to you another diamond in the rough for you.
