Say It Louder – Intro: Phun and Noh’s Confession

Hello, hello and welcome to a brand new series from your beloved Content Team. We thought why not give ourselves a bit more of a challenge and present you from today on with something to enjoy for FIVE days a week again. I know, it’s a bit of a stretch, but that’s how Content Team always works and we like to spread our wings and just bring you new and different things once in a while, next to all the old time favourites we bring to you every week anyway.

So what is this new series all about, I hear you say. Well, it’s really a rather easy series as we wanted to throw a little bit more light on some of our most favourite scenes with the bestest and most interesting words spoken. This series is all about quotes and what the words meant in that situation and what it might mean in the bigger pictures when we look at our lives as well.

Please be aware that this series WILL contain some spoilers as we really can’t discuss words spoken in a series and their impact without giving anything away about the plot, can we. So please be aware. Just like Love Songs this series comes with a spoiler warning. So be aware.

Still doesn’t make any sense to you? Well, let me just show you by example and follow me through our first ever “Say It Louder”.

The Words

“I really can’t do it. I really can’t think of you as just a friend. I know that it’s wrong. But I can’t help myself. The more we are seeing each other the harder it is for me. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. Can we just stay away from each other for a while?”

“Phun…”

“Don’t worry. It’s not like I am dying to make you hate me. I realise that both of us are guys. I have Aim, you have Yuri. I don’t want things to get worse than they already are.”

“If we ignore all those reasons and we stop thinking about who we are supposed to be, then what is it that you want to do?”

“I want you, Noh.”

Phun and Noh, Love Sick

The Meaning

For our first ever “Say It Louder” I struggled a bit finding the right quote to really introduce this new series to you guys. But when I really thought about it, there was just one show that could lend me the words for this blog and that’s definitely the big granddaddy of them all and that’s Love Sick. What would be more fitting for an introductory post then remember the series that brought us where we are today.

And I have to say one thing that I always loved about Love Sick was the fact that a lot of the issues were just discussed and talked about. With it being such an early BL series, we didn’t have the same amount of skinship we have today. Also with both actors being still so young (Captain was 16 I think at the time. So clearly a minor) I liked that things were really mainly shown to us via words and longing stares. And hand holding. How can I forget the hand holding? But I am losing my train of thought here. I apologise.

The quote I chose from Love Sick is the moment when Phun finally gives in and pretty much lays all the cards on the table. He has fallen in love with a guy, with Noh and while he has tried so hard to ignore the facts, he just can’t any longer. The feelings in his heart are just so overwhelming and the way he is almost silently crying throughout everything he says, just really makes my heart ache.

Also the fact that Phun pretty much always was the guy who did what other people wanted from him. He is a very dutiful son to a prominent politician. He is a very good student who does tons of extracurriculars. And he also always listens to whatever his girlfriend Aim asks him to do. We remember the scene from shortly before this happens where Aim demands Phun to go shoe shopping with her even though Phun was home sick for the entire day which led to him collapsing on the sidewalk later on. Thank the Lord for faithful Noh who knew that going shopping with a fever is never a smart move. But what I wanna say is that we have the dutiful Phun here who has met Noh and for the first time in a long time he is actually asked what he wants.

And that for him must have been the biggest eye opener in regards to Noh. Here is a person who actually listens to HIM. Who actually gives a crap about how Phun feels and what he would like to happen in his life. We remember that the reason why Phun approached Noh in the first place was due to his dad forcing him to date the daughter of a colleague. So it really is crystal clear that this poor boy never really knew what having your own choices means and when he meets someone who finally cares, his heart can’t do anything else then fall for this magical creature aka Noh.

I always really loved this scene. I loved how Phun acknowledged every reason why he wanted Noh is wrong. He is so honest and open about it. He knows they both have girlfriends. He knows that they are both guys (Not that this is a problem per se, but in the society and climate they both live in, it definitely is an issue) and him, coming from the family he comes from, knows that this would cause major issues with his dad. But it doesn’t matter because the heart wants what the heart wants and if given a choice, Phun will always choose Noh…

And while I have focused more on Phun now here, I also think that in this scene Noh shows his true colours as well. Because Noh is definitely one of the most empathetic and caring people you can ever meet. He could just very easily leave Phun to his own devices. Or just tell Phun that Noh himself was interested as well. But no, Noh just takes Phun’s hands and asks him what he would want if he could choose freely. He doesn’t pressure him, he doesn’t even make his own feelings known. He just asks Phun what he wants. And again I think this shows so much what a kind and awesome person Noh is and how much, even already at this early stage, he cares for Phun. How deep his affection already runs for the other.

So yeah, for me this scene will forever be very deeply engraved in my heart. Love Sick was such a milestone for our community and I will continue to say it until I am blue in the face: Every serious BL fan should watch this show at least once! Because it’s due to scenes like this, that touched our hearts so much, that the BL genre is so successful these days. The amount of gratitude we should have for both Phun and Noh is just ridiculous. Without them, there wouldn’t be no us. Or at least not in the way we know it now. And for that I will forever be utterly grateful.

And that’s it, our first ever Say It Louder. I hope you enjoyed me prattling on about a specific moment in BL history and let’s see what we have next week for you.
