Hidden Gem: My Engineer

Hello, hello, my friendly Misfits,

And welcome to Content Team’s last scheduled blog for a while. Of course we are gonna be back in July, but during June we are all just gonna be so busy with celebrating Pride, that we decided it’s better for us to take a little break. We also are still working behind the scenes on a few little sweeties for you, but that’s all still very hush hush and you have to wait and find out what we are planning.

But back to the matter at hand which is another wonderful Gem and just like last week this old woman is gonna go back to a real smash hit, that really surprised us all, because let’s be honest… After the entire casting debacle that happened for this show, no one really believed that it would be any good. But oh, how wrong we were. How incredibly wrong.

So yeah, today I am going to introduce you to

My Engineer

A classic Thai BL with just enough twists to make it enjoyable and sweet enough, but with enough realism in it to make it feel sincere. Again, this is a show that older BL fans obviously all know because we all lost our sweet marbles when this show was airing. But with so many new fans coming in and so many shows being out now, I really felt like this show deserves a bit of a highlight. And I also am still hoping and praying for a second season of this show, as we were promised we would get one and I am still willing to kill someone over how they left us hanging with Ram and King but I am getting side tracked here. I apologise.

My Engineer – What is it about?

When Bohn meets Duen, it’s a lizard that brings this unlikely pair together. Bohn doesn’t take long to take a liking to the more timid medicine student Duen, but Duen is not that impressed by loud mouth Bohn who is more known for his romantic escapades and the shenanigans him and his group of friends seems to get into at every turn of a corner. But Bohn is not someone to be discouraged easily and the hunt for the gentle medicine student begins…

King is a plant lover through and through and is one of the best students in his year. When he meets Ram at the library he is instantly intrigued by the dark eyes of the other student and when he later on meets him during tutoring his interest reaches a new peak because there is something special about Ram: He doesn’t really talk to anyone. But just like Bohn King is always up for a challenge and so his campaign to get closer to Ram starts…

Mek and Boss have been best friends since university has started. Everyone calls them the hyper wife and the silent husband and it fits them perfectly. Both of them are very happy with their friendship, if there wasn’t the little issue of some unresolved romantic feelings. And when an old love interest finds her way back into the boys’ life they need to decide what they’re gonna do: Best friend or girlfriend? What will it be?

Frong is Bohn’s sworn enemy since start of university. Both fought for the title Moon of the University during freshman days and their rivalry never stopped. When Frong meets cute Duen his interest is definitely peaked, but with Bohn in the middle, things can just get complicated. And while Frong is still trying to find an in with Duen he is suddenly confronted with Thara, Duen’s cousin, who is the king of dorks. Thara is no one Frong would normally go for, but something about this nerd definitely is hitting differently.

Why You Might Like it:

We have four couples here. So whatever you like about BL: You’re gonna find it here. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a certain look, it doesn’t matter if you prefer a certain trope. I can promise you, it’s all in there. The storyline for every couple is so different and unique that there is just no way that there won’t be anything in this show you don’t like. There just has to be. Due to simple maths. Like please. FOUR COUPLES!

This is Thai BL at its finest. It’s not very realistic, but still realistic enough to be interesting. It is filled with romance and laughter, friendship, love, misunderstandings, family dramas, kids, and even some dogs. It’s really so many things in one and that’s really what makes this show so incredibly unique. Usually when I watch a multi couple series I am not that interested in most couples, but here that’s not the case. Every couple has their own selling points and their own unique chemistry. So yeah, it’s really a perfect example of what good BL can be.

Talay and Perth! I think this actually should be the only point I have to make about why you might like it because I am pretty sure everyone and their pet donkey went crazy for the Ram and King storyline. I don’t think that either Perth nor Talay were very well known before My Engineer but ever since both have become such a staple in the BL community that it’s just ridiculous. I think we all are still waiting with baited breath to see what’s gonna happen with this pairing and if we ever are gonna get our conclusion. But seriously, the Ram and King storyline back then really exploded in popularity and the chemistry between Perth and Talay is just something else. So yeah. I would definitely say just for these two it’s absolutely worth watching it.

It’s all very fluffy romance. There are a few hard hitting scenes in the show, but it’s all getting covered up with some sweet cotton candy and even more love and laughter. It’s just a perfect show to enjoy on a slow weekend. It will make you squeal, it will make you want to throw a shoe at the telly (since our boys obviously are stupid in the love department), and it will make you want to either write or consume a million fanfics about these wonderful characters. It’s just perfect Thai BL. There is really not much more to it.

Why you might not like it:

One of the characters, Mek, is getting dubbed. Due to the actor Ryan not being able to speak proper Thai (he is Chinese), he just got dubbed. But for some reason they decided to use the voice of an overweight and eldery truck driver, who might even be slightly drunk,  to do this and it really pissed me off after the first few words Mek uttered. So yeah, that’s something you have to live with.

Not all storylines are concluded. There was supposed to be a second season which would conclude all storylines but it’s been two years now and we still haven’t heard anything. So yeah, you have to live with this frustration, but there are enough fanfics out there to make up for this.

If you don’t like character fights over the stupidest misunderstandings then maybe watch this on a good day. Because the frustration levels can be a tiny tad high given the incredible idiocracy some of our boys show. But then again I am definitely one of these masochists that loves a show exactly for these stupid misunderstandings. But yeah, I know some people find that hard to stomach, so I thought I would give you a heads up here.

Finale Thoughts:

My Engineer was released during a very busy time period for BL, and even though they didn’t have a huge production company to back them up, they somehow managed to really make an impact in the fandom. As I said Perth and Talay pretty much exploded all over and MD, who plays Thara, found his way into other productions as well. So this cast really managed to produce something so outstanding that they even managed to hold their own next to some really big contenders. I mean, 2Together just came out at the same time and was all the rage. So yeah, My Engineer really had to battle with some of the most popular BLs and they still managed to stand proud.

I definitely feel that My Engineer is pretty much one of these Thai BL classics that every fan should watch at least once. It had such an impact on the community. It was the first really cursed production (the amount of recasting this production did is mind boggling) that came out the other side and were able to bring something to our screens. And the cast they finally were able to put together was just so spot on and perfect, I don’t think we could have wished for something more.

So yeah, if My Engineer is something completely new for you, please give it a chance. It will explain a lot about the popularity of certain actors and why certain things are in a certain way in our fandom. So yeah, I would definitely recommend giving this one a try.

And if you have watched it already: Please leave a comment below to make more people see how fantastic and unique this show is. Who was your favourite of the case and whose love story did make you squeal the loudest? Please share.

And with this I am gonna end this last blog. I hope you enjoyed our last five months of bringing you something new every week and you are excited for our next shenanigans.
