Hello, hello my lovely Misfits
And welcome to this Friday blog.I don’t know about you but I am really looking forward to the weekend. And that’s not just because we are doing our first streaming event in years on Saturday. No, it’s more because of the spring in the air and the sun that is shyly saying hello after the grey winter. The perfect time for young, spring love, right?
Oh, I am absolutely right. Because nothing screams spring to me like a cute and sweet puppy romance. Just something cute and sweet, as innocent as a cherry blossom after a tough winter. And I don’t know about you but when the mood strikes me to get really into the full pink fluff of it all I tend to look Japan, because let’s be honest. No one does it like the Japanese when it comes to fluff.
One series that really surprised me pleasantly in that regard recently was “If It’s With You.” The storyline is definitely based in reality and we have one party in our love story who until recently mainly was interested in the more physical side of love… Someone not really that interested in love to begin with. But when Amane meet Ryuji he just can’t help but fall for the boy. And the love story that follows is just so touching and sweet. Ryuji might appear to be a bit more down to earth and maybe not as into romance. But once he starts really thinking about it, he recognises that Amane means more to him than just a good friend.
The Situation
We are at the finale of this wonderful show now. Amane confessed his feelings for Ryuji a while back but Ryuji, who had not really much interest in love in general until now, was not sure what he felt and asked for some time. They meet again at the end of the summer at a firework display in their town. And after Amane has pretty much all but given up, a shy Ryuji is admitting his own feelings and both leave the fireworks as a couple. And this is where the following conversation happens.
The Words
Amane: “This route… What can I say?”
Ryuji: “We just walked here a while back but now it looks totally different.”
Amane: “I also… feel the same way. It was a one sided love when we came. But we are lovers on the way back.”
Ryuji: “Wait, you just made me feel so embarrassed.”
Amane: “Eh! But you said it first.”
Ryuji: “I didn’t make it embarrassing.”
Amane: “You did.”
Ryuji: “No, I didn’t.”
Amane: “I feel…”
Ryuji: “Yeah. I don’t want to go back yet.”
Amane: “Right.”
Ryuji: “ Let’s talk for a while before going back.”
The Meaning
I don’t know about you. But can you remember what it was like when you fell in love at this age? Like all the butterflies in your tummy and you just couldn’t believe that this person, that you had fallen so hard for, liked you back. You were pretty much in utter shock for a while and just couldn’t stop smiling like an idiot. You just wanted to spend all your time with the other person and saying goodbye was the cruellest and most tortuous thing you might have had to endure.
And that’s exactly what this scene reminded me of. Of all these moments when you were still young and all this love malarky was still new and so exciting. There were moments when it took over your entire life and I just can’t tell you how much it makes my heart soar seeing these two boys feeling just exactly that.
I love how Amane pretty much just says the same thing Ryuji says about things being different. But Ryuji, who might not be the most romantic person in the world, finds it a bit yucky but also can’t stop being all happy and smiley. I think that’s one thing that is so crazy about love. You would normally say something is totally cringy and over the top, but when the person you love says it to you.. A totally different story and even if you want to just die out of sheer cringness you still are so happy and floaty, just like Ryuji was in this scene.
And I think what I love the most and was really the perfect ending for this scene for me was the fact that they just didn’t want to be separated. They just wanted to stick together, talk and just get to know each other better. I don’t know if you ever had the fortune to just talk through the night with someone. Up to the point when the sun came up again and you were just so confused how this happened because time just seemed to exist.
So yeah, I am still the biggest sucker for innocent love stories and I just can’t wait for spring to arrive. For me this kind of japanese BL is the equivalent of a young lamb frolocking around on some beautiful green meadow. It just does something to my soul and makes me so, so happy. So if you need a jumpstart to spring… Watch some Japanese puppy love BL and I am sure you will soon also just fly around on a pink cloud of happiness.
