Hello, hello, my fellow Misfits,
And welcome to another Love Song. Today I am really excited as I am gonna take you all the way back down memory lane to a couple that most of you won’t even know about. But what am I here for if not for educational purposes? And history is important, even if it’s just snogging boy history.
So let me set the scene. We are in 2008 and yours truly had completely submerged in the gay daily soap scene that was exploding back then. Yes, yes. These were the dark days where we could just dream of BL like we know today. But we did what we always did and took the snippets the television threw at us and enjoyed every glance, every smile, every touch and on the bestest of days even a kiss.
I was back then first and foremost a McDean fanatic. Like hardcore fanatic. I started writing fanfics in English and started getting involved in the international fanscene, while before I was just in the german boy snogging scene. But once I noticed John Paul McQueen and Craig Dean at Hollyoaks, a British daily soap, I was so hooked. Their story started already in 2006 and it was just such an awesome and intelligent storyline with all the highs and lows a daily soap can offer you.
But what happened to my happy fanheart in 2007? Yes, exactly. The worst possible thing for any fan. Guy Burnet who played Craig Dean actually left Hollyoaks, leaving behind a destroyed John Paul and quite a few broken fan hearts.
But we wouldn’t just leave it at that and started bombarding the production studio with self knitted socks and sweets. And when James Sutton, who played John Paul, wanted to leave the show a year later, we finally all got, what we wanted:
Our sunset ending
Where Craig finally came back to Hollyoaks just to get the love of his life, John Paul, back. You have honestly no idea how these last couple of episodes went through the roof and pretty much the entire fan community went totally bananas. I remember the day it was announced that Guy Burnet would come back for James Suttons’ exit and I honestly bawled like a baby.
But nothing, really NOTHING could have prepared me for this last episode, where after a year of us fans suffering, waiting and hoping we finally got what we wanted: John Paul and Craig disappearing into the sunset as the golden couple they were.
And in this special last scene, the moment when they finally find each other again on a busy train station platform… that’s when we all could hear this masterpiece of a song from the band Does It Offend You Yeah, Epic Last Song. And heaven’s I think i never heard a title to a song that could have matched better to a scene then this song to this scene.
Just this one line “Baby, babe, I loved you for a long time…” still gives me the shivers after all these years and I honestly can’t help it but always get a tiny bit misty eyed. This last scene was pretty much the biggest thing in my fandom career I experienced up to that point. The whole energy of the entire fandom just waiting for this one moment and when it finally came, it was just perfect. And this song definitely made this moment even more special.
Because yes, I don’t think any of us fans back then could believe that we finally made it here, that we finally would get our sunset ending….
Lyrics:
I can’t believe I made it here
Today, I’m afraid, of yesterday,
I wrote this letter to you, my dear
In case, afraid, this fades, away
I say baby, babe, I’ve loved you a long time,
I try harder just to know your all mine,
I say baby, babe, I’ve loved you a long time,
I go happy knowing that you’re alright
I called, today, but missed you, again,
Todays, the day, I go up, in flames,
I sent, the money, to you, my dear,
Todays, the day, I burn, away
I say baby, babe, I’ve loved you a long time,
I try harder just to know your all mine,
I say baby, babe, I’ve loved you a long time,
I go happy knowing that you’re alright
I say baby, babe, I’ve loved you a long time,
I try harder just to know your all mine,
I say baby, babe, I’ve loved you a long time,
I go happy knowing that you’re alright
If I got you a little intrigued by this wonderful McDean storyline, just have a look at Kimbaforever’s Youtube channel where you can find the entire McDean story cut for your convenience. I honestly can’t recommend their storyline enough. It’s so fantastic and it might give you an idea what the snogging boys fans before you had to endure to get where we are today. Not that I would say it was bad back then. It was different and I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. Because it was a hell of a ride and yes, sometimes I miss the days of looking for tiny scraps of snogging boys instead of being suffocated by the sheer amount of content available.
But that would definitely be the topic for another blog. I shall leave you now, knowing full well that I will spend the rest of the day singing this song very loudly while annoying cats and husband equally. Sorry, not sorry. I am back in my McDean cloud and it’s very comfy here.
